The wonderful thing about barn weddings is that barns have a unique personality all of their own and only need minimal decoration – the old adage “less is more” could not be more true than here at The Great Barn. Whether you are the creative type who loves the prospect of making all your own decorations to add a really personal touch to the day, or maybe you would prefer to leave the decoration all to trusted suppliers who can do it all for you on the day – the choice is yours. But here are some tried and trusted ideas that work well here at The Great Barn.
Entrance
Our oak framed porch is beautiful on its own but if you wanted to make more of a feature of it, perhaps to have some of your photos done under as insurance against the great British weather, then floral arches, swags, and milk churns work well.
Fairy lights
You can never have enough fairy lights. Outside our patio is framed by fairy lights and inside our beams have fairy lights wrapped around them. Many of our couples also opt to have a fairy light canopy custom-made and provided by one of our favourite suppliers, Deans Events (event décor) which turn the barn into a magical place, particularly at night.
Drapes
For an additional sense of lush, drapes can be hung from the beams and down the pillars at the barn. These have also been custom made by Deans and can easily be put up on the morning of your wedding. You can also add drapes to the front porch, softening it with foliage or flowers.
Chairs
For your ceremony, many of our couples add a flower posy at the end of each row to frame the aisle. These chairs can then form the main top table (if you are having one). Alternatively you can add delicate organza or chiffon chair sashes to tie in with your theme – Deans provide a huge range of sashes including highly popular hessian sashes and lace sashes in ivory and white for those rustic themed weddings.
Table Centrepieces & Alcoves
Rustic wooden slices always work well. Team these with either mis-matched jars filled with a loose posy of fresh (or dried) flowers, chunky candles in different sizes, or water filled glass columns with a floating candle in each. If you want to go all out, you can also put candles and decorations in the alcoves in each barn.
Hired Props
There are a huge range of props available for hire such as LOVE letters (Smooth Moves Events), Post boxes (Deans), wooden crates and milk churns (Hibiscus Floral). For safety reasons, large items such as LOVE letters or your initials need to be based on the ground (not up on balconies) and should be collected by your supplier at the end of the wedding. Crates and milk churns of flowers create instant country style and are a brilliant way to add floral decorations at any time of year. Place them outside the barn to frame the doors and create a striking entrance. Using old crates gives a vintage spin whilst giant milk churns adds an extra country element to the décor.
Foliage, Foliage, Foliage
Nothing suits a barn wedding better than greenery. Bring the outdoors in and sprinkle natural foliage around – on the balcony, on the fireplace or simply around lanterns on the floor lining the aisle – the choice is yours. We have even had beautiful olive trees in hessian baskets brought in (from one of our favourite florists Hibiscus).
Happy decorating!
